Electrochemical Fatigue Sensor

Nuclear Facilities

Fatigue cracking is a well-known problem in the nuclear industry with an entire appendix (Appendix L) within Section XI dedicated to it. Augmenting Section XI inspections and flaw determination with Electrochemical Fatigue Sensor (EFS) System dynamic monitoring will allow for crucial detection of crack initiation and propagation in before it is evident with other methods such as eddy current and, in the future, between inspection intervals.

This is particularly important in the case where several cracks growing from different directions grow together and form one large crack. Use of EFS will also help determine crack growth rate of these potentially dangerous flaws.
